ARLINGTON — Chief Julie Flaherty and the Arlington Police Department are pleased to share that the Town of Arlington has been ranked among the 15 safest small towns and cities in the U.S.
The rankings were calculated and released by MoneyGeek, a financial advice website. A total of 660 small cities and towns nationwide and in every state were ranked.
The results are based on MoneyGeek’s analysis of 2021 FBI crime statistics, including violent crime and property crime, to quantify the cost of crime in each city and town. MoneyGeek notes that crime impacts communities economically — beyond direct crime costs, such as loss of property, services for victims and policing and corrections, high crime rates generally result in higher insurance premiums for residents.
Arlington was named the fifth safest small town in the U.S. with a crime cost per capita at $65.
The data also showed a violent crime rate in Arlington of 41.5 per 100,000 residents. Violent crime refers to four offenses: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. The property crime rate in Arlington, which refers to burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft and arson, was 295 per 100,000 residents.

“The men and women of the Arlington Police Department work every day to make our community safe for residents, business owners and visitors, and we are proud to be ranked among the safest small cities and towns,” Chief Flaherty said. “We will continue working alongside our public safety and community partners to provide the best possible services for the Town of Arlington.”
Other communities in Massachusetts ranked in the top 15 safest small cities and towns include Andover, Needham, and North Andover.
